A 12 year old girl has been shot dead by a policeman who had been aiming his gun at the father as he tried to evict the family from their home.
Ciara Meyer from Penn Township was pronounced dead after a bullet fired by Constable Clarke Steele at the father, Donald went through his arm and hit her, stated by the Pennsylvania State Police.
The police arrived at the apartment on Rebecca Drive at around 10am on Monday to serve an eviction notice and there was a “short verbal exchange” between Donald and the policeman.
The officer had been trying to serve the family an eviction notice when Donald Meyer, the girl’s father, allegedly aimed a rifle at the officer after an argument. Meyer aged 57, was taken to hospital for treatment, and has been charged with aggravated and simple assault, terrorist threats and reckless endangerment.
Constable Steele has not been charged with any offense and Perry County district attorney Andrew Bender said investigation is ongoing.
According to the eviction notice, Meyer and his wife Sherry owed $1780.85 in rent and court costs.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created to remember Ciara’s life. All funds raised will be contributed to the funderal and domestic violence and mental illness scholarship created by the Susquenita School District.
According to the Guardian, Ciara was the 21st person killed by police in the US just 13 days into 2016.
